Traveling with children in Bhutan

Travelling with children in Bhutan is remarkably stress-free in Bhutan. Number of visitors coming with children is increasing every year. Many people participate in different cultural, religious and historical tours accompanying short trekking and easy hiking. Children aged under five are not liable from the minimum daily tariff and five-to-12-year-olds get a 50% discount on daily tariff. Long drive during your tour, limited availability of TV and internet or any other entertainment sources may bore your kids in Bhutan. But kids can enjoy the company of other local kids and they are also easily accepted by the local people, that is the extra advantages for the foreign kids in Bhutan. Please read the following helpful tips before setting off your journey with children.

  • Most of the hotels in Bhutan  have roof top garden, which can be good play areas but might not be safe for young children.
  • Walking the crowded, narrow and pavement-less streets of Bhutan and other towns can be a hassle with young kids unless you can get them up off the ground – a backpack or sling is ideal. A pusher or stroller is more trouble than it’s worth unless you bring one with oversized wheels, suitable for rough pavements.
  • Disposable nappies are available in Bhutan but nappy-changing facilities and high chairs are a rarity.
  • Trekking in lower altitude is possible with children. We can arrange a separate porter to carry children if needed.
