Gay or Lesbian couples holding hands is easily accepted in public and will experience no difficulties and differences in Bhutan as this is socially acceptable and mostly done as to show your intimacy among friends. Like most Asians, the Bhutanese believe that what one does in private is strictly a personal matter, and they would prefer not to discuss such issues. Public displays of affection are not appreciated. Officially, male homosexuality is illegal.
