Mt. Makalu (8485M) is one of the fourteen eight thousanders in the world which is located in the Mahalangur massif . The massif borders between Nepal and China in the southern direction of Mt. Everesst and can be divided into three subsections – Makalu, Barun and Khumbu. The whole range of Mahalangur consists of the most popular mountains like Mt. Everest (8848M), Lotse(8516M), Makalu(8484M) and Cho Oyu(8201M). Makalu trekking trail goes through the protested Makalu Barun National Park and conservation project. It is in the eastern part of Nepal. Trekking in Makalu region offers the great view of Mt. Makalu, Arun valley, dense rhododendron forest, alpine meadow and mighty Barun glacier. It is home for 315 species of butterflies, 43 species of reptiles, 16 species of amphibians, 78 species of fish, 44 species of birds and 88 species of mammals. The entire Makalu trekking region rises from 850 meters to 5000 meters above sea level.
The breathtaking mountain views, landscape and beautiful trekking trails can be clearly seen from different popular vantage points such as Makalu Base Camp, Barun Valley, Arun Valley, Kauma, Tashi Gaun, Nehakharka, and Shipton La Pass. Makalu base camp trek is the popular trekking trail in Makalu Region which goes via very rugged and ill-defined trail. You can also trek to the beautiful Barun Valley if you are looking for an easier trek in Makalu region. Sherpa and Rai are the main ethnic group on the trail. The guesthouses run by those ethnic people are the primary shelter for every trekker. Travelers have option to fix their tent at the beautiful sides of the valley if you are planning a tented camp trek to Manaslu trekking trails. The guesthouses in the trekking trails serve clean, healthy, organic vegetables and food prepared by less trained but well experienced local kitchen staff. You have the option for continental and other food, though they are popular for typical Nepali dishes. The guesthouses in Makalu trekking trails are not-reachable from any communication and internet services. Fly to and from Tumlingtar is the only way to start and end your trip to Makalu from Kathmandu. Different unforeseen situations and circumstances such as adverse weather, snow, trail condition, river water level, flight delay and cancellation make changes to the itinerary without any prior information. Massif Holidays requests all participants to be flexible and open minded. Our leaders will try to provide the best alternative way in such condition.
