Mustang Trekking

Trekking Trail of Lower Mustang

Mustang region lies in the northern-central part of Nepal bordering with Tibet- autonomous region of China. Mustang was popular as a kingdom within kingdom till 2008 when Kingdom of Nepal became a republic. Still it is popular as the last forbidden kingdom as declared in the book written by Michel Peissel in 1964. The ex-king of Mustang is still honored as a colonel of Nepalese Army and highly respected among the locals. These days, Mustang region is divided into Lower Mustang and Upper Mustang. Lower Mustang mainly includes the area of  Ghasa, Tukche, Marpha, Jomsom, Kagbeni and Muktinath where as Upper Mustang comprises the area of  Chhusang, Tsaile, Samar, Syngbochen, Ghiling, Tsarang, Lo-Mangthang, Chhoser, Yara, Dhe, Dhakmar and Ghar Gompa.  Lower Mustang is the home to Thakali people , who are culturally and linguistically different from Tibetan people of Upper Mustang. The area of Lower Mustang is covered by Annapurna circuit trekking which is the more popular way to explore the region by many trekkers. But Upper Mustang trekking is the one and only way and great alternative for all trekkers to experience the last truly surviving Tibetan culture as it was in the past. Upper Mustang is similar to Tibet - the Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China by its history, culture, religion and geography.  Until 1991 no outsiders were allowed to enter Mustang . The first legal trekkers were allowed into Mustang in March 1992 with special trekking permit. Now Mustang is popular trekking destination in Nepal. Upper Mustang is popular as a restricted and off-the-beaten trekking destination. Trekkers require a special trekking permit from Nepal government with the help of any registered local trekking agency to trek in upper mustang region. No free individual trekkers are allowed.
